Kevin, your absolutely right - engineering is definately becoming a dying "art".

When I started karting (some time ago!) the sport was not just about driving. A big part of the sport was about doing your own preparation and engine work - sadly, thats all but gone now.

Regarding clearances, I've run the BT82 anywhere from .0015" to .006". Some engines seem to like tight tolerances, some wide. (My 210 Villiers ran beautifully on .0015" - that probably shows my age) There really is no magic number - it's just a case of trial and error. Probably not the answer you were looking for.
