The best way to prevent this happening in the future is to remove the carrier after every meeting and clean the axle with emery cloth and penetrating oil (don't know why alanrr said not to use WD40, as I've always used it). Take the axle keys out and make sure that the sprocket carrier can spin all the way around the axle and also slide all the way on and off with little effort. Cleaning every inch of the kart after every meeting will not only prevent issues like this on a race day when time is premium, but may also give you an indication of any other problems, which you can then tackle with plenty of time.
