if i remember correctly they started to use the cr250 engine in 250 superkarts because of cost and reliability, and also ease of getting parts. it just seemed to work well and caught on. there have been people experimenting with ktm engines etc but the cr still seems to work best. in 125 however the speciallist kart engines such as the tm k9 seem to do better than 125 bike engines.
