Barrel rolls are relatively safe crashes to have as the energy is dissipated over a relatively long period of time. A Jedi has the drivers feet in front of the front axle centre-line, does not (did not?) require a plumbed in extinguisher system, has no front crash structure etc etc. They're also extremely old technology.
The Formula Vee uses a beam/swing axles which should never have been put on a road car let alone a race car.
FF1600 is definitely the way to go if staying away from the major championships. It's cheap, safe, competitive, there are grids everywhere and you can race at the Formula Ford Festival and the Walter Hayes Trophy. They're also supporting WTCC in a couple of weeks.
