Well..... it depends on the barrel and crankcase. Many had the 'side' ports so that they were not 'mirrored' left and right: they could easily be 'swept backward' (I can't describe it but.... if you looked at the crank case from above, the three ports [ in a thre port engine] may not make the shape of half a 'cross' but more like a swept-back-arrow head.... that's a hopeless description!).
So... when revolving the barrel, the 'sweep' of the underside of the barrel would not have matched the top of the crankcase.
The gaskets WOULD fit if there was "180 degree rotational symetry in the plane 'standing on the top of the crankcase'"..... but that's not how the Rotax 124 is!
