As Chris said, BRP changed their manufacturing methodology to enable better component repeatability and greater consistency in the final product. People will swear that from 2009 onwards the motors were better than anything that went before, but that's simply not true. Its possible that on average the later motors will develop slightly more power and torque but as proper test involving a statistically representative number of engines has [to my knowledge] not been undertaken, we don't know.
This means everything said is annecdotal. For what its worth, I have a fiched 2008 motor and a 2009 motor and there's practically nothing between them in terms of laptimes.
