i never ran a sproket protector in tkm, and never lost a chain...it was just one more thing to undo when changing setup. having said that they are a darn good idea if your prone to running on kerbs or off the track while learning, if you dont run one and lose a chain you can buzz the engine, so have to be very quick on the kill switch to avoid any damage....running a sprocket protecotr will help keep the chain on and potentially stop any engine damage
