I was shown some 25mm stubs recently that were thick walled tube rather than solid.

The tube had kinked when hit in the right 'wrong' way, whereas a solid 17mm axle in the same situation wouldn't bend.

Mind you, there was also someone who sheared the end off a 25mm front spider, something I would have said wouldn't happen, though it did look as if there were faulted inclusions on the fracture line.
