Unless I'm mistaken, you have to run a larger rear sprocket with a larger front sprocket to keep the same ratio.
Its the number of times the front has to turn to complete one revolution of the rear that matters.
For example, if you run 11/80 currently, the closest gear ratio with a 10 front sprocket would be a 73 rear.
If you went for a 12 front it would be an 87 rear.In all of these the front has to turn around 7.3 times to complete one rev of the rear, so they are the same ratio (A final drive ratio of approx 0.1370).
