Andy 99, we have found the only time new rubber is a significant advantage is in the winter months when the track surface temperature is below 10DegC. In the summer there is often a significant advantage to use old rubber as it will reduce grip in the early laps. As Richy said you will only be using the compound in your own tyres for the first 1 or 2 laps and after that you will pick up the rubber laid by others . Karting is an expensive sport so why spend money on tyres in the summer when there is no advantage.

You will have seen all of the front runners cleaning off the rubber from their tyres every session in the summer, the reason for that is that Cadet chassis's are designed to run on the long life hard compound in your SL3’s and not the sticky rubber you are picking up from the TKM’s and Rotax’s. With the sticky rubber on you will go slower in the summer months and cause higher temperatures in your engine resulting in having to run the carb richer to overcome the temperatures therefore reducing engine performance due to it being too rich.
Feel free you spend your money on new tyres but if you listen to all of those who have been there and done it, Richy has won several cadet championships, Danlee won the SKRC championship last year and we have just missed out to both of them in the past and are 1st at Rissy and 3rd at Shenny at the moment. I assure you the SLICK tyres we are running at Shenny this weekend were new in January this year and will be at least 1500 laps old.
