That may or may not be true. Although when I started karting in France in 2007 I would guestimate that it was about where the UK is now in terms of grid numbers and diversity of competitors.

Successive regulation changes, many of which are now being mirrored in the UK, (like Super Cadet and PG licences) that are often designed to keep the money within the karting establishment have driven karting in only 4 or 5 years to the point where it has virtually disappeared up its own backside and there are only two types of competitors left. These are either the very rich or the off spring of karting professionals (circuit/team owners etc.) who are also effectively being funded by the very rich.

This year Micromax is introduced and from January next year will be the only option from 7 to 11. That's about 4k for an outfit before you turn a wheel, no secondhand equipment available. Who in their right mind starts karting by spending 4k on a kart for a 7 year old?
