Can anyone please explain the merits of changing the ignition timing on the BT82 please?

Our TaG engine has permissible timing settings between 3mm and 4mm BTDC, so to achieve the best possible power at the high rev end, which way should the timing be set? Presumably, whichever setting that is, will have a detrimental effect on the lower rev end?

A simple but effective explanation would be appreciated.
