I had many Italian 'factory selected' motors over the years... it was definitely baullox ! Realizing the size of the market [of fools like us], the Italian manufacturers even became quite cocky about their factory selection - branding them testa rossa, jubilee etc... and then creating factory selections among those motors.

I guess fools and their money are easily parted... and I know I was !

In terms of the Rotax Max today, it's less of an issue as the manufacturing processes are so much better and the repeatability a magnitude better than randomness back in the 1970s/1980s.
