We have connected everything as shown on the wiring diagram, (with the yellow ground wire going to the screw on the starter motor and the red one going to the HT coil). As you said there's only one place each of the other leads can go. When we tried to start it twice it attempted to crank but just died like the battery was flat.

We've checked the battery and it's putting out 12.6ish V no problems, though when using a multimeter on the feed to the starter (the single long pin connector) we get madly fluctuating voltage. If you're free our number is 07909 7623000.
