With anything mechanical there are production tolerances and there will always be good barrels and less good barrels. If you buy one engine, you do not know whether it will be good, average or poor. Barrel selection has been going on for years in Rotax and its very costly - because there's nothing that can be done with the discarded less good barrel if you adhere rigidly to the regs which say no machining. There is no moral difference between selecting one barrel from fifty or machining within the fiche, in fact the latter is clearly less wasteful. As the Rotax regs are evolving perhaps they could be amended to allow machining within the fiche.
