I've always gone for the cheap option, tend to use string and a "Smart Level" for setting up cars as well. With laser alignment kit, I always worry someone might have dropped it at some point, so would probably double check with string, setup bars and a tape-measure anyway.
Amusingly when I first started karting a helpful competitor saw me setting the toe with a tape measure, and very kindly fitted his laser alignment gauges to my kart. He then asked what toe I had been trying to align to. So I said 2 mm out. He looked at it, and said "you've been really lucky with that tape measure, it's spot on already!" I had guessed it would be pretty close.
