This was suggested to me as a possible "free-tuning" mod when I was struggling to set up my TKM with a 30 mm axle, and I can see how it might make a small difference.

However, the question asked of me was, "Have you got an old axle you're not using? If so, bring it along and I might try shortening it a bit."

We never did get around to trying that one, as we thought it was the wrong direction. Rather than buying another axle, I'd try shortening an old spare first. My best guess is that it's similar to using shorter hubs, but less so. Have you tried that yet?
