Last year we changed the timing on our W60 engines quite a lot. We very rarely changed carb setting to reduce temp. our carbs liked to be set in a particular way for maximum performance.

Before changing the timing of the engine to reduce engine temp. make sure your kart is not too grippy, if not then have a go at timing changes on a practice day.

Mark the current position with a punch or mark it somehow. Then move the timing 1mm and give it a track test (note engine temp, revs and laptime). Then re-test and see the difference.

We found considerable advantages last year in getting the engine timing right at particular tracks/conditions.

(Always remember to put the timing back to standard after the test or race day, or you may find the engine is slow at another track or in different conditions.)

We used changes in engine timing in conjunction with carboration, chassis tuning, weather conditions and track dymanics. If we got everything right, which we did almost all the time, Then its down to the driving.

Also our engine temp rarely went over 185, when other were struggling to reduce engine temp and losing performance.

Its not easy to change timing and gain performance if you have not got other stuff sussed. Especially carboration, which most don't know how to do properly with the W60.
