I've read this post having it being 'shared' on Facebook. I have to say much of what I have read is apparent in the 4-stroke 'world' as it is in 2-stroke.

When I got into karting a few years ago and logged onto this site I was baffled by how 'old' it appeared, and could this really be the 'only' dedicated site. That however was put aside for the usefulness of some posters, where a pinch of salt had to be taken into account for others.

In pro karting and particularly non MSA sprint racing the numbers have declined over the last couple of years. I remember starting a 'clubman' race at pfi with 60 karts on the grid, and I'm sure there was at least 30 pro's on another grid. Now there is barely over 40 drivers in total.

Searching through various club sites to find alternative venues to race at is difficult, even picking the phone up and attempting to speak to the 'right' person at a circuit is difficult. Looking towards MSA and the taking of various tests, subscription and replacement of all the karting gear I use just to be up to a certain 'standard' is expensive and is enough to put people off. If you've a disposable income and deep pockets then you can do well, but for all those whom 'can just afford' to race it's more than enough to put you off.

For a cost comparison this year in 4-stroke I've spent ~ Ł250 a month, racing twice a month in a mixture of 3 series. Most items are purchased second hand and 'luxuries' i.e. new tyres, are not even considered.

One area that I believe will generate more numbers going forwards is the Elite Karting League set up by Bob Pope. This brings a great deal of 'fairness' into the sport as the kart you drive is never the same from heat to heat. Everyone is the same weight and everything else is the same.

The future? Who knows? Can we plod along and see what happens? Or maybe all that have posted are actually 'dis-connected' from the reality and we need those whom CAN CHANGE things to have a say.
