My observations after what will be our first year in the sport with a 8yr.

CLASS STRUCTURE: Most kids come into karting having experienced it at a friends party/local indoor track. Most parents are then faced with the dilema of how to start racing. The class structure in the UK is appauling - in cadets there are 3 options alone - and then within this you have SP engines/standard engines etc etc - its a nightmare. Make the rules simple and the engines for the cadets VERY simple to maintain (most of us have little mechanical knowledge when we start with our kids). I actually think the new Parilla is a brilliant solution - just wish they MSA could now make Cadets just one engine.

For each age group - there should be just one choice - something like 6-10yrs Cadets 7hp 10-13 "SuperCadets" 15hp 13-16 Juniors 25hp etc.

DRIVING STANDARDS: As a newbie - the next thing that HAS to change is that it has to be become a non-contact sport - that includes pushing and shoving at the start and this "bump drafting" that is perfect accepted at the clubs we race at. It has to be a family sport that is safe. The racing standards on the whole are crap - esp in the cadets - because there is no consistant rulings. We have been thrown out of heats this season due to my 8 yr using to much kerb/grass - but having been "loaded up" a few times and the resultant shunt that followed - nothing is ever done about it - and as far as I can see its perfectly acceptable - so I have to tell my son to do the same. We have even seen the kids banging wheels leaving the dummy grid/going into the scruts bay.

MAKE MEETINGS MORE CONDENSED: All the MSA meeting are long drawn out affairs. We race at Whilton and Kim - both are Sat test (6 x 6mins sessions) and Sun (3 x 8 lap heats & 1 12 lap final). Its a long long long weekend for less than one hours actual track time! Why don't the clubs just split it? Say all Cadets and Juniors test Sat AM and race Sat PM and all Seniors (who may be working Sats) race and test Sunday. I know this is how they do things on non-MSA meets - much more sensible to me.

STRUCTURED TEACHING: None of our local clubs offer anything in terms of driver developement - seems crazy that they don't want to encourage their drivers to improve and get better. Most clubs seem to be stuffed full of people who have spend tens of years in the sport - these are the best assets to the club - and they should do more to help the starters/newbies - whether that is training evening for the kids etc etc. I am aware that most teams provide this - but not everyone can afford it. Maybe the clubs should offer a buddy scheme - where they pair you up with another driver/parent for your first few meetings.

We have had a fantastic first year - much more reward and more difficult than I expected - but it could be so much better with a bit of tweaking!
