Squish is the effect that gap (between the cylinder head and piston) have on the air (& fuel) flows within the cylinder during the compression stroke. They go together and effect, swirl and tumble.

For some reason (probably because it's relatively easy to measure) the cylinder head clearance (the gap between piston and cylinder head) has become known as squish, particularly in karting.

In reality you can't measure squish, swirl and tumble without an optical engine.
