Had a problem with cadet Iame this weekend.

Over the weekend the engine began to kick back when starting, making it very difficult to pull over. The problem gradually got worse over the weekend resulting in two broken ropes and a broken handle - as well as pulling a load of tendons in my forearm which is now a nice purple colour ! (many thanks for starting it in the final Robin !!)

The engine also seemed to lose top end power and not rev through cleanly in higher revs.

I have stripped the engine - the piston ring seems ok and moves freely at the sides with some carbon sticking it on the exhaust port side as would be expected. It pulls over easily with no plug in.

I am guessing that the timing has gone out slightly (too much advance). The underneath rear engine mount did get clobbered at one point when the lad was fired off over a high kerb, so I am hoping that the crank hasn't been damaged.

Has anyone else had a similar problem ? I have looked at the stator on the ignition but cannot see any problem, although I cannot see if the woodruff key is damaged. It would also appear that you need a special tool to remove the stator.

Is there an easy way of checking the timing position on these things and removing the stator or is it a case of giving it to an engine builder to sort ? I've got a degree wheel and dial gauge etc but the fiche isn't exactly clear where to measure from etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
