If it fells as though it's firing when you are still on the 'up stroke' then your timing is out. This could be caused by the rotor/stator having moved and thus the engine is firing well before top-dead-centre which slams the motor into trying to run backward for a 'stoke': hence the pain in the arm.

Your crank could have moved re-setting the 'pickup' or the rotor/stator has move, possibly on the key/keyway. In any case, it sounds to me like a problem with the ignition timing.

I think I'd get it checked by an engine builder if you don't have the tools yourself..... or buy the tools!
