I've raced at Silverstone in gearbox and watched a guy in front of me lose a wheel by the hub sliding off the axle the WRONG way! The acrobatics performed were something to behold, especially from so close-up! If the hub is loose enough (vibration) then the wheel moves 'inward' on one direction corner but stops when it gets to the 'chassis'. However, in a prolonged corner 'the other way' it can get 'dragged' off the axle as there is nothing to stop it.
For safety, many axles used to have a groove to take a circlip to make sure the wheel CANNOT 'fall off'. It's a 'no-brainer'!
I know people are running with this STUPID set-up but it simply cannot be safe!
