Sorry ! got my stators and my rotors mixed up. It is indeed the rotor that is affixed to the crank.

I set the ignition coil clearance to 0.2mm. It was set way closer than that and not catching, so as you said it is unlikely that there is any bend in the crank. I did take off the nut and washer that hold the rotor on and could not see any obvious damage to the key or keyway although I wasn't able to remove the rotor to see properly. I did think about using a gear puller, but the rotor appears to be made of quite soft aluminium and might be damaged if I tried this.

I did not know that there was some sort of electronic advance / retard system built into the coil pack. I am beginning to suspect that that might be the culprit....

Anyway, I have taken the engine to Adrian at BRT to sort it out properly - rather than my continued tinkering - and will let you know what he comes up with as to the diagnosis !
