Taking the simplest possibilities, if both stubs are damaged, and the laser and 'datum' are both (in this example) mounted on the stubs.......
That's just one example. Neither tape nor laser can easily measure if the stubs and the mount are equally twisted in opposite directions. No system is perfect but a 'tape' is a cheaper form of 'imperfect'.
We always went for regular re-jigging. That way. we knew if the chassis was straight. We did the tape and eye line one for a quick check and checking if the chassis needed a jigging.
As usual, it's: each to his own. My point was that there is more than one method of checking this stuff,
