I would have a try in the new Honda GX200 class. Although they are not 2 stroke the 200s are way faster than the hire karts you have been in. Being a 4 stroke the maintenance is extremely low compared to a 2 stroke. The engines are sealed and very equal which gives close racing. You could probably run all year maybe longer without touching a thing on the engines, only an oil change. This would leave you to concerntrate on the driving and chassis setup. Then if you wish you could progress onto 2strokes. Speak to Roger at RPM if you need any more info on this class.
