It's not worth searching for silly amounts of freedom for the axle simply because everthing changes as soon as the kart is being used. I'd recommend doing the very best job you can and then trusting it.
Some people bizarrely use WD40 instead of grease in search of this free-running. Don't! WD40 is NOT an acceptable axle lubricant..... it's hardly a lubricant at all! Use good clean grease, replace it fairly regularly, k=make sure the axle isn't actually binding and you should be ok.
Yes, the axle might 'improve' with use. That would imply that something is not sufficiently tightened and the bearings have then moved into correct alignment..... that's NOT a good way to do it!
