Years ago when I raced a white saloon car, I stuck black numbers on.....but was told that was illegal and I had to make up a black border the same size as a standard number square "to delineate where the number backing would be on a different colour car".

Really, I think some scrutineers just enjoy flexing their muscles and don't apply good old common sense.
