I have had a brake disk shatter after hitting a kerb
I wasl lucky and managed to spin the kart across the grass slowing it down before thi hit ti the barriers
I have also witnessed a kart disk shatter in front me ant that driver wasnt so lucky he ended up in hospital with multiple injuries as he hit the barriers at nearly full speed.

Do you realy want your precious 6-7 year old hurling along the track with no brakes at the next braking point
Its an easy fit and its there for a very good reason
