Thanks 3190. I've been over this evening to check the kart and guess what.... earth lead has come apart = no earth. I've definitely tried to start it since it gave up the ghost. I wired the earth back together tonight but still no spark so I imagine I've foobarred the coil by turning it over. I'll get another coil ordered and fix the earth properly and report back if it doesn't solve.

You live and learn....
