My son is racing in cadet karts in Spain with the Spanish spec 64cc version of the Gazelle engine where the H and L screws can be adjusted when driving. He’s currently racing in an arrive and drive series. We’d been told beforehand that he couldn’t touch the carb, although at the first race saw a few kids making adjustments and found out that the carb rules had changed. I need to get him prepared quickly for round 2…and teaching an 8 year old about carb tuning isn’t the easiest!

He’s OK with the high jet as he can hear the four stroking and adjusts the screw in a minute or two, but has anyone got any advice on tuning the low jet/screw on track from the stock settings? I assume the low jet feeds fuel all the way through the throttle opening so its setting will impact on the high jet, and it really needs to be set first.

It’s easier to give him simple rules to follow as opposed to asking him to make a decision based on his view of the engine performance, so is it reasonable to tell him to move the low jet out until it 4 strokes on acceleration out of the slowest corners, and then move it in a little until it stops? I’m concerned that this will give him too rich a setting in the low range, but I just don’t know enough about the characteristics of the Gazelle engines and diaphragm carbs to help him more. Any advice would be appreciated. For reference the carb is a HL352A which I think is virtually identical to the UK version apart from there is no cover on the jet screws.
