The difference is because of:
a) The level you are racing at. b) The way you use your engine.
Some people rev their engines to 17,000rpm and race at the sharp end of the Super 1 grid. They are likely to rebuild engines much sooner (4 hours say). I generally don't rev above 16,000rpm and race at club level. I get it rebuilt every 8 hours (ish).
The engines will go much longer without a rebuild but slowly start losing performance. It's extremely rare for a TKM to have catastrophic failure. My only failure in 12 years or so is a big end failure which was my own fault. At club level, it isn't unreasonable to simply budget for one rebuild per engine per season and forget about hours.
