If battery is insufficientlly charged the starter motor either wont turn over more than a splutter, turns over but doesnt engage or turns over too slowly to fire the engine

Testing it on the kart is the only sure fire way of knowing - you can use a voltemeter to check the voltage (usually between 12.4 - 13.1), however the depth of charge may be insufficent to deliver the power required for the motor, so voltage alone isn't conclusive

Your best bet is to have 2 batteries and keep both charged up as best you can so if one fails the other can be swapped in

Alternatively, you can sort out a battery unit with a plug that fits into the black plug socket on the loom (the one linked to the battery terminals) - keep that fully charged. If on the grid before the race the battery is too dead, plug in the backup into that socket and use the extra current it can provide to fire the engine (it essentially links across the main battery in parallel)
