I agree with Alan - it is not dangerous to remove the valve core - if the whole lot's going to explode it'll do it with aor without the core.... Ask any garage tyre fitter and you'll find out that they seat the tyres without the valve cores.
Use a strap around the tyre - this is good sense not only to get the tyre on the rim, but also to prevent it being distorted by the higher pressures used to seat the tyre.
I used to use WD40 - was OK, but not a patch on proper tyre soap - only about £6 from Dartford Karting (or whoever) and lasts forever!!
Tyre tongs are ok, but only needed if the tyres are brand new and freezing cold; and you should never have let them get that cold anyway....
