Is the SL8 a round profile tyre?
Round profile tyres tend to dome more when overpressured and you could have been running more or less on the centre of the tyre only.
The edge of the tyre only gets the occasional polishing rub by the track (hence the shiny) and as only the centre of the tread gets warm, the whole tyre feels cooler than normal.
The heat put into a tyre is a function of the size of the contact patch as well as the energy of the drive and the track temperature. If you reduce the size of the patch, you also reduce the potential grip.
Raising the pressure is an attempt to get more adhesive grip than you lose mechanical grip.
