The wires from the stator (thats the bit that fits around the flywheel) usually break close to the female connector spade. If one of them has broken near the stator it would have to be removed by undoing the 3 allen screws to get to it. It could also be that the insulation has split allowing the wire to earth against the crancase. Is the coil earth lead OK?
