When you say you removed the "fan" to change the clutch, I presume you mean you removed the flywheel. This is not necessary to change the clutch. Did you undo the 3 screws holding the electrical plate beneath the flywheel? The position of this determines the timing, and it would be moved ANTI-CLOCKWISE (as you look at it)to retard it. Did you use a piston stop to undo the crankshaft nuts, or did you hold the opposite crank nut (which could cause the crankshaft to twist). Your problem must be either a weak mixture (caused perhaps by worn oil seals if you twisted the crank, or a carb problem), or too advanced ignition timing.
