There are no marks for setting the ignition, and due to the angle of the spark plug it cant be set with a dial gauge either, its purely a trial and error setting although it is possible to set it with a strobe light. Although obviously first choice is to get it looked at by an expert, I appreciate that this may not be financially possible so my advice would be, first do a visual check of the crank for run-out as you turn it over by hand (they are a strong crank so I'd be surprised if its out), then remove the flywheel & mark the position of the backplate (so you can put it back if necessary) then retard the timing by a couple of degrees and then try the engine to see if the situation is improved.
