If you cannot undo the hex bolts then you can lift off the barrel with the head. Make sure the piston and connecting rod do not bang against the crankcase and observe that the base gsket is not being torn. You can put the barrel back on easily by squeezing the piston ring and lowering the barrel down, just make sure the gap in the ring is lined up with the pin in the piston ring groove. An extra pair of hands can help.
