Endorse all of the previous advice, one more useful trick to try:

Get hold of a soft leaded pencil and give the electrodes of the sparkplug a good coating of graphite (but don't bridge the gap). This will give an incredibly large fat spark and often start a reluctant engine.

Used to work well on the Bantams and other old bikes with dodgey magnetos.

Ah yes, those were the days, a bottle of pop, a few bags of crisps and an afternoon with mates and a 16H Norton on the local wasteland!
