Just thinking a bit more, is the cross member the one running behind the seat, roughly parallel with the rear axle? If so, make sure that the rear bottom mounting clamp for the engine has been modified so that it only touches 90 degrees of the engine mounting tube rather than 180 degrees (on the left hand side when looking from behind). That way the engine can be mounted where the cross member joins the engine mounting tubes.
