A thread below highlighted that these days race lengths are often defined by time, rather than laps, and that in terms of length, 12 lap heats and 18 lap finals are not unusual at club meetings. Back in the Good Old Days (stop yawning) it was virtually universal to give 3 x 8 lap heats and a 10 or 12 lap final. Less racing, yes. But the advantage was that you could also have 2 x 8 lap practice sessions, which if offered today (there was no saturday practice back then) would mean that if it was a track you were reasonably familiar with, there would be no need to do Saturday practice, which would save considerable cash and probably score a few brownie points with your other half.
