i used to put the engine on a solid steady work bench then id use the clutch spanner and turn the clutch with it until the end of the spanner jammed against the bench and then id hold the engine down to the bench and just use a rachet on the nut. As long as you hold the engine steady then the clutch spanner shouldn't move and will hold the clutch without you having to hold the spanner.

Sounds crude but it always worked for me. Whatever you do don't hold the nut on the opposite side of the engine as this can twist the crank.
