You are right to measure there, as it is easy, but first you need to learn that that is correct for your wheel off-set etc.
Your total rear width from outer wheel edge to wheel edge may not exceed 1400mm or 1.4m; in practice you will then run at say 1.395m.
Stick your wheels on; stick a tape measure through the hub and axle right the way through; use a ruler at both ends of the tape as a straight edge; set the hubs to give you 1.395m o/a. Obviously make sure you start equally both sides if you make adjustments!
Now take your measurement with your wheels off and remember it's just for that wheel type, as others may have different off sets.
Happy karting.
