We certainly found that as teams became the norm at national level a lot of the friendly atmosphere went from the sport.
Costs (in comer cadet at that time) were going through the roof with some engines changing hands for £15k+.
Our solution was a move to easykart for a national championship (and the chance of entry to a world finals). Costs are far lower as everyone is restricted to a single chassis/engine and the options allowed is strictly limited - so no pressure to have the latest super 2.10ths quicker seat!
ACR got Club 100 to run the series and everyone if very friendly and helpful (just like karting used to be). If a driver has a problem (seized engine/bent axle) then the Club100 guys will try and manage the timetable to allow the driver to get it fixed - none of the "you are 5 seconds late on the grid so go away attitude".
At the fianl round of the championship one year pne of the contenders for the championship was helping his closest rival to change an axle so that he could get out in time - WHY? because he wanted to win on the track. Try and get that level of sportsmanship in some other series.
It would be great to see something like this run at club level - but do enough people really want it?
I saw a post on this site some time ago from a dad who's son did the honda clubman races (where you can buy another driver's engine for a set price) and he said it was good but his lad kept asking when they could move to the proper honda class.
Karing may not be perfect but it is still ppossible to have great fun at a reasonable cost
