My only thought on this is that they are there to stop the air filter getting soaking wet when it's raining. If you look at the design of the old one the trumpet is to the side so the rain didn't get forced down the trumpet. On the new one if the trumpets are removed I'd imagine on a wet day the air filter would get soaked.

I'm sure in the early 90's they used to be called wet boxes and they were only attached during wet races due to the regulations not requiring them. I'd assume it is faster without the airbox on at all.

That's my best guess ; )
