With the comers you had to use a synthetic oils for races and this took off the carbon. You then used shell m for practice to put it back on. If you raced most weekends then it could be difficult to find time to do that.
This changed with the Tryton carb as it was thought at one point that changing oil was causing the problems with the carbs. That was when the MSA allowed cadets to have the same oil choice as the other classes.
As Andy has said, it would be worth talking with one of the engine builders or getting one rebuild by them where you can pick their brains.
