Doesn't make any difference to performance, but larger engine sprockets last a lot longer than smaller ones in most chain drive applications I have tried. The chain tends to last a bit longer too. It's to do with the way the chain load is distributed on the teeth that are doing the work.

All other advice above is correct IMO, but if you're already running at 11:78 for instance, changing to a 13 tooth engine sprocket means you'll need a 92 tooth rear sprocket to get approximately the same ratio, which gives substantially more chance of damage from kerbs or the occasional bit of grass-tracking.
