If you can't turn the rear wheels, try taking the chain off and try again. This will confirm or eliminate something tight on the axle.

We used to run WTP,the cluches are very much the same and tend to fail in the same way. Smoke from the clutch would suggest slipping, either from revving the engine and holding on the brake whilst stationary, a very tight rear axle or clutch linings failing.

Inspect the clutch in any case and pay particular attention the the metal around the drilled holes at the end of the three slots: if you see cracks in this area the clutch will fail in short order!

Don't try to remove the clutch without a puller. Put a bit of load on the puller centre bolt and tap it smartly with a hammer to release it from the crankshaft taper. We used to tighten our WTP clutch nut to 30lbft torque with Locktite on the thread. Note which way around you replace the thrust washer behind the needle bearing, one side is chamfered and goes against the crank.
Hope this helps.
(I too am pennyless) Dave.
